Susan Styer, a self-taught artist, says that her most influential years were spent in the country as a young girl. “exploring the Chester County countryside on foot or on horseback, observing with a keen eye the essence of my surroundings”.
It was those experiences, which continue today from Styer’s Elverson studio, that have enabled her to translate the natural world on canvas. She employs an impressionistic style, interpreting landscapes and rural life.
What she enjoys most is plein air work. “I need to paint with a sense of place,” says Styer, finding a spot that excites me, and turning it into a good painting”.
Styer has paintings in corporate and private collections. She won first place at the Plein Air West Reading event in Reading, PA in June 2018, and her oil painting “Landscape with Cooling Towers” was chosen to travel with the Schuylkill River Heritage Art Show earlier in 2018. She won the Artist Choice Award at the Cecil County Plein Air in 2019. She competes in Plein Air Competitions all year, which would include Brandywine Valley Plein Air, Chadds Ford Winter Plein Air, West Reading Plein Air, Cecil County Maryland Plein Air, Bucks County Plein Air and LandArtEvents Plein Air which supports the Brandywine Conservancy.
