stan SMOKLER
Making sculpture for Stan is an ongoing exploration of how
material effects the space it occupies. He is always searching
for new ways to invent and organize space. Welded
sculptures, created from steel, are modeled in a spontaneous
and improvisational manner. This style of modeling creates
a lively sequence for discovery. Once beginning to work, Stan often
sees things unfold that he did not visualize before. Ultimately,
he strives to breathe new life into discarded material to create
forms which deliberately deny their past history in order to
serve a new formal purpose.
